FLIPPING CLASSICS

When TCM challenged us to come up with ideas for their monthly film program, we were excited to think ‘outside’ of the box. We wanted to create something that would capture the essence of classic film while feeling like a new take.

Inspired by the idea of old-school animation, we built a physical model of a flip book to study the movement and timing of the turning pages. We recreated the design in 3D, combining old-school technology with cutting-edge procedural techniques.

The result showcase TCM's monthly schedule and special features, using a neutral color palette that allows TCM to switch up the color of the month and feature both full-color and black-and-white films within the pages. The 3D elements are composited with filmed bokeh highlights and ocular diffusion, giving the footage a cinematic look that pays homage to the golden age of film.

Finally, we added a touch of noise and desaturation to tie everything together and give the promo a vintage feel. The result was a modular toolkit full of creative possibilities, showcasing TCM's monthly theme and complementing actual film clips.
